Fryer Memorial Museum
The Fryer Memorial Museum is housed in the former Munnsville post office building which George R. Fryer built in 1886. This building was the post office for 74 years and was vacated when a new post office was built in 1960. Arthur G. Fryer, son of George, was also a postmaster at this site, as well as other residents.
For researchers it is important to note that Madison County was formed in 1806 From Chenango County. Chenango County was former from Herkimer and Tioga Counties in 1798, with the Town of Stockbridge formed in 1836 from the towns ofSmithfield and Lenox in Madison County and from Vernon and Augusta in Oneida County.
A great deal of effort has gone into the collecting of genealogical and other data in these other counties and towns for Fryer's patrons. Some of the archives and books were donated, some purchased, some are on loan from Olive Boylan's ersonal collection and some records were obtained from the New York State Archives in Albany.
Fryer has much local history including artifacts of the Munnsville Plow Company, and original advertisements. Munnsville was the home of the famous Armours and of William Dempster Hoard publisher of Hoard's Journal and Governor of Wisconsin!
