Polish American Museum
The Polish American Museum was founded on January 20, 1977 at the Polish American Citizen's Association, 5 Pulaski Place, Port Washington, New York. It exists by virtue of a charter granted on September 30, 1977 by the State of New York Department of Education, Regents division.
The museum is a unique educational resource designed to communicate to visitors the culture and folk heritage of the Polish people. It contains documents, artifacts, paintings, displays and exhibits illustrating the important achievements by people of Polish heritage, and examples of their outstanding contributions to humanity.
The present museum building, purchased in January 1982, is the former Port Washington Public Library. Within thirty rooms, the building houses fifteen exhibit galleries, a research library, the Archacki Archives, a lecture hall, gift shop, offices, supplementary classrooms and storage areas.
The Museum's exhibits illustrate how Poles and Americans have made valuable contributions to the fields of medicine, education, art, science and political theory.
The museum brings to life many such contributions in exhibits of historical figures, including Madame (Sklodowska) Curie and Ignacy Paderewski. Also on display are reproductions of important events such as the "Christening of Poland" in 966.
The Museum is adorned with many paintings, drawings and photographs by Polish artists depicting Polish writers, political and patriotic leaders, and generals and soldiers who dedicated their lives to help Poland, America and many other countries in gaining and maintaining independence.
The museum is decorated with proclamations, old maps and other memorabilia, including Polish and international dolls in authentic regional costumes.
