The Whitney Museum of American art is home to the most extensive collection of 20th century American Art in the world. Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney founded the Museum in 1931. At the opening of the museum, there were only about 700 pieces of art. Now there are over 12,000 works of Art in the Museum’s permanent collection. The Whitney has works from just about every significant 20th century artist. The works include paintings, drawings, sculptures, photography. and prints.
The Whitney takes advantage of its annual and biennial exhibitions to purchase works for its collections.
Some of the notable artists whose works are in the Whitney are Reginald Marsh, Josephine Nivison, Edward Hooper, David Smith, Franz Kline, Stuart Davis, Georgia O’Keefe, John Marin, Alexander Calder, and Alice Neel. The list is much too long to include all of the great artists who have their work in the Whitney. You’ll just have to come in to see what this great Museum has waiting to show you. This is a very active Museum in the way of exhibitions, which means you can visit the Whitney many times and always see something new.
