Fort Ticonderoga was built in 1755, on Governor-General Vaudreuil's orders. A Canadian engineer Michael Chartier de Lotbiniere, who named it Fort Carillon, built Fort Ticonderoga. Fort Carillon was built by the French to protect it s southern most border from any further encroachment by the British. Fort Ticonderoga would be protecting the French fur trade routes as well as the portage to Lake George.

The fort endured a British attack commanded by General Abercromby in 1757, in which a force of approximately 3500 French soldiers under the command of General Montcalm defeated a British force of 16,000. The British had lost over 1900 soldiers and retreated to the south.

In the following year, a British force commanded by General Amherst laid siege to the Fort and after four days, the French abandoned the Fort, and in doing so blew up the fort's powder magazine causing major damage to the fort. General Amherst rebuilt the fort and named it Fort Ticonderoga.

The Fort once again traded hands in 1775, when the American forces commanded by Ethan Allen and Benedict Arnold led 83 of their Green Mountain Boys in a sneak attack on the British.

In the winter of 1776-1777, the British under General John Burgoyne attacked the Fort Ticonderoga headed by Commander St Clair, who evacuated the Fort and ran south.

In September of 1777, American forces led by Colonel John Brown tried to recapture Fort Ticonderoga. Colonel Brown succeeded in capturing the outworks of the fort and rescuing about 100 American prisoners, but he never captured the fort.

The Fort never again saw military action.
